Infima, the Archimedean Property, Density of the Rationals and Rational Approximation from Below in an Ordered Field Whose Nonempty Sets Bounded Above Have Suprema

In an ordered field in which every nonempty set bounded above has a supremum, nonempty sets bounded below have infima, every element lies below some natural number, the rationals are dense, and every element is the supremum of the rationals below it.

Statement

In the setting of The Integers and the Rational Numbers, with the Natural Numbers and the Integers Identified with Subsets of the Rationals, let FF be an ordered field in which every nonempty subset of FF that is bounded above has a supremum, and let κF:Q→F\kappa_{F}:\mathbb{Q}\to F be the canonical embedding.

Every nonempty subset of FF that is bounded below has an infimum.

Let x,y∈Fx,y\in F.

There is n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N} with x<nx<n, the natural number nn being read in FF as in Commutative Rings, Fields and Ordered Fields: Standard Notation §numerals.

If x<yx<y, there is u∈Qu\in\mathbb{Q} with x<κF(u)<yx<\kappa_{F}(u)<y.

xx is the supremum of κF({u∈Q:κF(u)<x})\kappa_{F}(\{u\in\mathbb{Q}:\kappa_{F}(u)<x\}).
