The Borel σ-Algebra of the Real Line Is Generated by the Closed Rays, and by the Open Left Rays

The Borel sigma-algebra of the real line is generated by the closed right rays [a,∞), and also by the open left rays (−∞,a), a real.

Statement

In the setting of Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation, let B(R)\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R}) be the Borel σ\sigma-algebra of R\mathbb{R}, as in Measure Spaces, Borel Sets and Lebesgue Measure on the Real Line: Standing Notation (v), and for a set C\mathcal{C} of subsets of R\mathbb{R} let σ(C)\sigma(\mathcal{C}) be the σ\sigma-algebra on R\mathbb{R} generated by C\mathcal{C}. For a∈Ra\in\mathbb{R}, [a,∞)[a,\infty) and (−∞,a)(-\infty,a) are the rays of Intervals of the Real Line (iii), and {[a,∞):a∈R}\{[a,\infty):a\in\mathbb{R}\} and {(−∞,a):a∈R}\{(-\infty,a):a\in\mathbb{R}\} are the sets of subsets of R\mathbb{R} of The Families of Rays of the Real Line Are Sets of Subsets of the Real Line (i).

B(R)=σ({[a,∞):a∈R})\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})=\sigma(\{[a,\infty):a\in\mathbb{R}\}).

B(R)=σ({(−∞,a):a∈R})\mathcal{B}(\mathbb{R})=\sigma(\{(-\infty,a):a\in\mathbb{R}\}).
