Greatest Elements as Suprema, Suprema and Infima of Nested Sets in [−∞,∞], and a Scaling Criterion for Order in [0,∞]

A greatest element of a subset of a partially ordered set is its supremum; suprema and infima in the extended real line are monotone under inclusion; and an element of [0,∞] whose products with all reals strictly between 0 and 1 lie below a bound lies below it itself.

Statement

In the setting of Routine Facts Used Without Citation: Arithmetic, Maps, Predicativity and Indices:

Let PP be a set, ⪯\preceq a partial order on PP and AA a subset of PP, with suprema formed in PP with ⪯\preceq as in Bounds, Least and Greatest Elements, Suprema and Infima for a Partial Order (iv). If gg is a greatest element of AA, that is, g∈Ag\in A and v⪯gv\preceq g for every v∈Av\in A, then gg is a supremum of AA, and sup⁡A=g\sup A=g.

Let now ∞\infty, [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty], [0,∞][0,\infty] and the order ≤\le be as in The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (i), The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii) and The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (iii), with suprema and infima of subsets of [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty] formed in [−∞,∞][-\infty,\infty] with ≤\le as in Bounds, Least and Greatest Elements, Suprema and Infima for a Partial Order (iv); they exist by Order and Suprema in the Extended Real Line (iii).

If A⊆B⊆[−∞,∞]A\subseteq B\subseteq[-\infty,\infty], then sup⁡A≤sup⁡B\sup A\le\sup B and inf⁡B≤inf⁡A\inf B\le\inf A.

Let a,α∈[0,∞]a,\alpha\in[0,\infty], with the product on [0,∞][0,\infty] as in Addition and Multiplication on [0,∞] (ii). If c⋅a≤αc\cdot a\le\alpha for every c∈Rc\in\mathbb{R} with 0<c<10<c<1 (so that c∈[0,∞]c\in[0,\infty] by The Extended Real Line, Its Order, and [0,∞] (ii)), then a≤αa\le\alpha.
